When my family decided to migrate to the United States from Cuba, they provided me with an incredible opportunity to attain an education. The struggles my family faced helped me understand that education is a true privilege. I am beyond thankful for the opportunity gain knowledge, experience, and skills through my education. The support and admiration I receive from my family has strengthen my ambition to succeed in my academic, professional, and personal goals. Most importantly, I want to represent Cuba as a community of resilient, passionate, and adaptable individuals.

For over eight years, I dedicated myself towards practicing mixed martial arts. I participated in tournaments, spent hundreds of hours perfecting my form, and taught students the meaning of karate. In addition, I taught younger students unarmed defense and hands-on training. Without karate, I wouldn't be the individual I am today. Karate enlightened me on the meaning of perseverance, courtesy, self-control, integrity, and indomitable spirit. The discipline taught in the dojo (through uniforms, traditions, and techniques) can be translated to other areas of my daily life, including academic and personal.

Future Plans

After receiving my Biology and Psychology dual-degrees from Florida International University, I intend on applying to various MD-PhD programs. The techniques, skills, and memories I have obtained from conducting research and practicing medicine as a paramedic have only reinforced my desire to become a physician-scientist. This occupation fits perfectly with my lifestyle and career ambitions because it combines my two true passions: laboratory research and clinical care. For the rest of my life, I intend on dedicating my time and effort into assisting future mentors, conducting experiments, and absorbing new knowledge.
